Compare macOS terminal depth, terminal-native AI, and local process management.
Ghostty (v1.3.0, March 2026) is a GPU-accelerated, MIT-licensed terminal emulator by Mitchell Hashimoto, written in Zig and Swift, with 45,000+ GitHub stars and native UI on macOS and Linux. It intentionally focuses on being a fast, correct terminal emulator rather than a workflow platform. The best Ghostty alternatives depend on what gap you are trying to fill. iTerm2 is the strongest fit if you want deeper macOS-specific terminal features like hotkey windows, triggers, profiles, native tmux integration, and a Python scripting API. Warp is strong if you want AI agents and automation built into the terminal. Solo is a different product category: a desktop process dashboard that manages local dev commands with auto-restart, file-watch restarts, CPU/memory monitoring, and native notifications. Solo works alongside any terminal, including Ghostty.
Start with the capability you want to replace. Each option overlaps with Ghostty in a different way.
Recommended option
The deepest macOS terminal available. iTerm2 (v3.6.9) has hotkey windows, triggers, profile management, native tmux integration, a Python API, paste history, instant replay, session restoration, and inline images. It is macOS-only and heavier than Ghostty, but covers far more ground.
Best for
Best for macOS power-terminal workflows.
Recommended option
Best for teams that want AI agents, session sharing, and workflow automation built into the terminal itself. A fundamentally different product category from Ghostty.
Best for
Best for developers who want AI in the terminal.
Recommended option
Best for teams that want to manage local dev processes outside the terminal. Solo is a desktop process dashboard with auto-restart, file-watch restarts, CPU/memory monitoring, and native notifications. It works alongside Ghostty or any other terminal.
Best for
Best for process visibility alongside any terminal.
Start with iTerm2 if you want deeper macOS terminal features like hotkey windows and scripting. Start with Warp if you want AI agents built into the terminal. Start with Solo if the real problem is coordinating local dev processes rather than the terminal emulator itself.

Start with one project and a small task. These guides walk through the setup and what to check when the work finishes.
Set up both tools in one project, give one agent implementation work, and ask the other to review the diff.
Read the guide →Give a lead agent a plan, shared todos, and a scratchpad so workers have clear assignments and a useful handoff.
Read the guide →Put a Laravel server, Vite, and a queue worker in solo.yml, then manage their output and restart behavior in Solo.
Read the guide →Solo is a lightweight desktop terminal workspace for local agents, project commands, interactive terminals, and long-running services. It sits beside your editor, keeps your stack visible, and gives Claude Code, Codex, and the rest of your tools one shared local control surface.
Solo is built by Aaron Francis, creator of faster.dev and Database School, and VP of Marketing at Laravel. He built Solo after running Claude Code alongside his own dev stack and getting tired of juggling nine terminal tabs just to keep local agents, services, and project commands visible.
He is also a dad to two sets of twins, which tends to create a strong preference for software that reduces chaos instead of adding more of it. That is why Solo keeps showing up in these comparisons as the local workspace around your tools, not another editor or orchestrator trying to absorb the whole workflow.
Free for four projects on macOS, Windows, and Linux.
Start with a terminal and add the programmable meta-harness when you need to coordinate agents with your local development stack.
