Best Ghostty Alternative

For developers who like Ghostty but need something it does not cover.

Ghostty is a GPU-accelerated terminal emulator created by Mitchell Hashimoto (HashiCorp/Terraform), launched December 2024, written in Zig and Swift. It has 45,000+ GitHub stars, ships under the MIT license via the Hack Club nonprofit, and runs on macOS and Linux with native UI on each platform. As of v1.3.0 (March 2026), it supports auto shell integration, Kitty graphics and keyboard protocols, and hundreds of built-in themes. The right replacement depends on the missing capability. You may want deeper macOS-specific terminal features like hotkey windows, triggers, or native tmux integration that Ghostty intentionally does not include. You may want an AI-oriented terminal platform. Or you may want a separate process dashboard for managing local dev commands outside any terminal. iTerm2 is the strongest alternative for deep macOS terminal features. Warp is strong if you want an AI-native terminal. Solo is a different category entirely: it manages local processes, restart behavior, and notifications alongside whatever terminal you already use.

Comparing against Ghostty Visit Ghostty

Why people look for a Ghostty alternative

Ghostty is intentionally a terminal emulator, not a workflow platform. It does not have hotkey windows, profile switching, triggers, paste history, or a built-in Python scripting API the way iTerm2 does.
Ghostty does not run on Windows yet. If you need cross-platform coverage including Windows, Ghostty cannot help today.
Ghostty has no built-in AI or agent features. If you want the terminal itself to drive coding workflows, you need something else.
Running many long-lived dev processes (servers, watchers, queues) still means juggling separate terminal tabs or sessions, regardless of which emulator you use.

What to look for in a Ghostty alternative

Whether you want another terminal emulator with more macOS depth, an AI terminal platform, or a separate process dashboard
Whether you need Windows support (Ghostty does not have it yet)
Whether deep shell integration features like triggers, profiles, and scripting matter to you
Whether the real friction is the terminal itself or coordinating the processes running inside it

Recommended options

Start with the capability you want to replace. Each option overlaps with Ghostty in a different way.

Recommended option

iTerm2

Website Read Best iTerm Alternative

The deepest macOS terminal. iTerm2 (v3.6.9, March 2026) has hotkey windows, triggers, profile switching, native tmux integration, a Python scripting API, paste history, instant replay, and session restoration. It covers significantly more macOS-specific ground than Ghostty, at the cost of being macOS-only and heavier.

Warp

Website Compare Solo vs Warp

Best if you want the terminal itself to include AI agents, session sharing, and workflow automation. Warp is a fundamentally different product category from Ghostty.

Solo

Website

Best if the issue is not the terminal emulator, but coordinating local dev processes. Solo is a desktop process dashboard that manages commands defined in solo.yml with auto-restart, file-watch restarts, CPU/memory monitoring, and native notifications. You keep Ghostty (or any terminal) and add Solo alongside it.

Best for

Best for teams that want process visibility and shared startup workflows without replacing their terminal.

Switching guidance

How to switch away from Ghostty without losing the plot

Start by identifying what Ghostty is not doing for you. That determines the right replacement.

  • If your pain is missing macOS terminal depth (hotkey windows, triggers, profiles, scripting), test iTerm2 first. It covers the most ground on Mac.
  • If your pain is that you want AI features in the terminal, test Warp. Ghostty does not include AI and is not planning to.
  • If your pain is juggling many long-lived dev processes across terminal tabs, try Solo. It sits alongside your terminal rather than replacing it. Define commands in solo.yml and get auto-restart, file watchers, and notifications.
  • If you need Windows support, Ghostty cannot help today. Consider Windows Terminal, WezTerm, or Alacritty for cross-platform terminal needs.
Recommendation

Choose iTerm2 if you want the deepest macOS terminal feature set. Choose Warp if you want AI features built into the terminal itself. Choose Solo if the real need is managing local dev processes with restart behavior, monitoring, and notifications alongside whatever terminal you prefer.

Common questions

What is the best Ghostty alternative on Mac?

For deeper macOS terminal features, iTerm2 is the strongest alternative. It has hotkey windows, triggers, profile management, native tmux integration, and a Python scripting API that Ghostty does not offer. For AI terminal features, Warp is a better fit. For managing local dev processes outside the terminal, Solo fills a different gap entirely.

Is Solo a terminal emulator alternative to Ghostty?

Not as a full replacement. Solo includes interactive terminal sessions, but it does not try to match Ghostty's dedicated rendering and terminal feature set. Keep Ghostty for terminal-first work and use Solo for project processes, agents, restarts, monitoring, and coordination.

Should I leave Ghostty if I mainly want better agent workflows?

You can keep Ghostty. Solo runs installed CLI agents beside your dev servers and workers, with separate output and status for each. Try Warp if you want agents built into the terminal itself.

See what Solo actually is

Solo is a lightweight desktop terminal workspace for local agents, project commands, interactive terminals, and long-running services. It sits beside your editor, keeps your stack visible, and gives Claude Code, Codex, and the rest of your tools one shared local control surface.

Built by

Built by Aaron Francis

Solo is built by Aaron Francis, creator of faster.dev and Database School, and VP of Marketing at Laravel. He built Solo after running Claude Code alongside his own dev stack and getting tired of juggling nine terminal tabs just to keep local agents, services, and project commands visible.

He is also a dad to two sets of twins, which tends to create a strong preference for software that reduces chaos instead of adding more of it. That is why Solo keeps showing up in these comparisons as the local workspace around your tools, not another editor or orchestrator trying to absorb the whole workflow.
