# Multiple windows

Workspaces can live in separate windows, so you can put one client's projects on one monitor and another's on a second. Each window gets its own sidebar, terminal area, and workspace rail.

## Opening a workspace in a new window

Right-click a workspace icon in the rail and choose **Open in new window**. The workspace view moves out of the current window into its own window.

Solo remembers this placement: if you close a standalone workspace window and later reopen that workspace from the rail or command palette, it opens in its own window again rather than joining the main window.

## Moving workspaces between windows by dragging

With multiple Solo windows open, drag an icon for a workspace open in the current window out of its rail and drop it anywhere over another Solo window to move the workspace there. While you hover the target window, its rail shows a **Move** drop overlay. Press `Escape` mid-drag to cancel.

Dropping that icon within the same rail reorders the current window's workspaces instead (see [Managing workspaces](./managing-workspaces.md)); dropping outside any Solo window does nothing.

## How windows and rails interact

- Each window's rail shows the workspaces open in **that window** at the top. Other workspaces that are shown appear dimmed below. With **Hide inactive workspaces** enabled, inactive workspaces collapse into a stack until you click it.
- A workspace is only ever open in one window at a time. Clicking a dimmed workspace that's open in another window focuses that window instead of opening a duplicate.
- Switching from the [command palette](../command-palette/using.md) follows the same rule — Solo jumps to whichever window owns the workspace.

## Emptied windows close automatically

When the last workspace leaves a secondary window — whether you dragged it away or used **Open in new window** from that window — the now-empty window closes on its own. The main window is special: it hides instead of closing, and comes back when a workspace opens in it.
