# Managing workspaces

Create, rename, reorder, and delete workspaces, customize their icons, and move projects between them. Most management lives in **Settings > Workspaces**, with quick actions available from the workspace rail.

## Creating a workspace

- **From the rail** — right-click the workspace rail (or click the **+** button at the bottom) and choose **New workspace**. Enter a name and click **Create**.
- **From settings** — open **Settings > Workspaces** and click **New workspace**. This dialog also lets you set the initials and color up front.
- **While moving a project** — choose **Move to workspace > New workspace…** from the project's context menu. Enter a name, then choose **Create and move** to create the destination and move the project in one step.

New workspaces start empty. Creating your second workspace is what makes the workspace rail appear (see [Workspaces overview](./overview.md)).

## Renaming a workspace

- Right-click the workspace's icon in the rail and choose **Rename workspace**.
- Or edit the **Name** field in **Settings > Workspaces**. Changes in the settings list autosave after a brief pause — there's no save button.

## Icons

Each workspace has an identity used in the rail and other workspace UI. It's built from three parts, all editable in **Settings > Workspaces**:

| Part | Behavior |
|------|----------|
| **Initials** | Up to two characters, shown in the workspace's swatch. Solo derives them automatically from the name (for example, "Client Alpha" becomes "CA"), and you can override them. |
| **Color** | A swatch color behind the initials. Pick from eight colors — slate, blue, green, red, purple, cyan, orange, pink — or **No color** for a neutral swatch. |
| **Custom image** | Click the image button next to the icon preview to choose an image file (`png`, `jpg`, `jpeg`, `gif`, `ico`, or `webp`) no larger than 256 KB. The image replaces the initials and is copied into Solo's data directory, so the original file can move or be deleted. Click the **X** button to remove the image and fall back to initials. |

While a custom image is set, the initials field is disabled. If an image ever fails to load, Solo silently falls back to the initials.

## Reordering workspaces

The configured workspace order determines which workspace the **Switch to workspace 1-9** [hotkeys](../keyboard-shortcuts/customizing.md) target. Each window's rail uses that window group's own order, which can differ from the configured order.

- **Drag in the rail** — drag an icon for a workspace open in the current window up or down within that window's rail. An insertion indicator shows where it will land. Press `Escape` mid-drag to cancel.
- **Drag in settings** — use the grip handles in the **Settings > Workspaces** list.

Note that dragging an icon for a workspace open in the current window *out* of the rail and onto another Solo window moves the workspace to that window instead of reordering — see [Multiple windows](./multi-window.md).

## Deleting a workspace

Delete a workspace from **Settings > Workspaces** using the trash button on its row.

- If the workspace contains projects, the confirmation dialog requires you to pick a destination workspace. Its projects are moved there — **nothing is deleted from disk**, and no projects are removed from Solo.
- If the workspace is empty, the confirmation simply notes that no projects will be moved.
- You can't delete your only workspace; the delete button is disabled when just one exists.

## Moving projects between workspaces

To move a project, right-click its header in the sidebar and open **Move to workspace** (see [Project context menu](../projects/project-context-menu.md)). The native submenu lists workspaces in their configured order, with the current workspace checked and unavailable. Choose another workspace to move the project immediately.

Choose **New workspace…** to enter a name and move the project to the newly created workspace. If the workspace list is too large for the native menu, choose **Choose workspace…** to open a searchable picker; the current workspace is marked **Current** and remains unavailable.

Moving a project never stops its processes; agents, terminals, and commands keep running through the move.
