# Terminal reattach behavior

Solo keeps terminal views current automatically when you switch processes, return to a terminal, or reopen a project view. You don't need to refresh a terminal by hand.

## What happens when the view reconnects

When you select a process or return to a terminal, Solo reconnects the visible pane to the current process state:

- If the visible pane is already current, Solo keeps streaming new output.
- If the visible pane is stale, Solo refreshes it with the latest terminal snapshot.
- History can be fetched separately in pages when you scroll upward.

This reattach path is a display synchronization mechanism. It does not restart the process and does not change the command configuration.

## When reconnecting takes a moment

If the pane can't reconnect right away, it shows **Reconnecting terminal** ("Restoring live output...") while Solo retries in the background. Visible output and your scroll position stay in place during retries.

If automatic recovery doesn't succeed, the pane shows **Terminal connection failed**. Click **Retry connection** to try again. The process keeps running either way.

If Solo's interface itself looks stale or stuck, run **Refresh frontend** from the [command palette](../command-palette/using.md). It reloads Solo's interface without stopping running processes.

## Resize and display changes

The terminal surface measures its rendered cell grid and sends debounced PTY resize updates while the selected process is running. Theme and font changes cause the renderer to repaint the visible frame.

## Clear output is separate

Use **[Clear output](./context-menu.md)** only when you intentionally want to discard retained output. It is not a display refresh and it does not restart the process.
