# Bell sounds

Solo can play an audible bell when terminal notification events fire — things like the classic BEL character (`\a`) and supported [terminal notification sequences](./triggering-from-scripts.md).

## Configure bell sound

1. Open **Settings**. The default shortcut is `Cmd+,` on macOS and `Ctrl+,` on other platforms. A custom Hotkeys binding for **Open settings** takes precedence.
2. Go to **Notifications**.
3. Find **Bell sound**.
4. Choose a sound, or select **None** to mute.

Use the **Test** button next to the picker to hear the selected sound. The default is **Ping**.

## Available sounds

On macOS, the picker lists the built-in system sounds from `/System/Library/Sounds`, plus any custom sounds you've placed in `~/Library/Sounds`. If the sound list has already loaded, restart Solo after adding a file to `~/Library/Sounds` so the new sound appears in the picker.

Bell sound selection and configured Solo bell playback are currently macOS-only. On Windows, Solo currently sends native notifications with their notification sound disabled.

## What to expect

- Bell playback follows your system volume.
- The bell is tied to terminal-notification events like BEL and supported OSC notification sequences, plus important process alerts such as crashes and [auto-restart exhaustion](./auto-restart-notifications.md).
- Focused same-process suppression applies to terminal BEL/OSC notifications, including their bell. Important crash and auto-restart-exhaustion alerts are not suppressed merely because that process is selected.
- Terminal BEL/OSC alerts require an effective notification level of **All**. Important-alert bell delivery uses the current frontend project and process level snapshots; a missing project snapshot falls back to **Important**, and a missing process snapshot falls back to **All**.

## Disable bell sounds

Set **Bell sound** to **None** in Settings.
