# Terminal font settings

Solo gives you detailed control over how text appears in terminal panes. You'll find these options under **Settings** > **Terminal** > **Appearance**. By default, `Cmd/Ctrl+,` opens Settings; you can remap or disable that shortcut under **Settings** > **Hotkeys**.

## Font family

Choose the font used in the terminal. The menu includes fonts bundled with Solo plus monospace fonts installed on your system.

Bundled fonts:

- JetBrains Mono
- Geist Mono
- MonoLisa
- Input Mono

Installed fonts are shown in a separate group. Solo filters that list to monospace families and shortens very long family names in the dropdown while keeping the full font name available as the option title.

If a font is missing common terminal punctuation, Settings shows a coverage warning. If the webview renderer appears to fall back instead of resolving the selected font distinctly, Settings shows a renderer warning.

## Font size

Terminal font size shares the `10/13` through `18/13` steps from the app's [interface scale](./font-scale.md), applied to a 13 px terminal base size. Interface scale also has larger `19/13` and `20/13` steps that are not terminal font-size options. The available terminal sizes are 10-18 px.

You can change terminal font size from Settings, from the [command palette](../command-palette/using.md), or with the [default shortcuts](../keyboard-shortcuts/default-reference.md):

- `Cmd/Ctrl+=` increases terminal font size.
- `Cmd/Ctrl+-` decreases terminal font size.

## Font weight

Solo lets you set regular and bold terminal weights separately. Each control offers CSS weights `100` through `900`.

When Solo can detect the selected font's available weights, unsupported weight buttons are disabled and an unavailable saved weight is snapped to the nearest available weight. Bundled font weight availability is known ahead of time:

- JetBrains Mono: `100`-`800`
- Geist Mono: `100`-`900`
- MonoLisa: `400`, `700`
- Input Mono: `400`, `700`

The default terminal font is bundled Geist Mono with regular weight `300` on non-Windows platforms and `400` on Windows. The default bold weight is `700` on every supported platform.

## Letter spacing

Adjust the horizontal spacing between terminal characters. Settings labels the available steps from `0.5` through `1.3`; the default is `1.0`.

The displayed labels map to stored values from `0.75` through `1.15`. Solo converts the stored value to a pixel offset with `(storedValue - 1.0) * 10`, producing offsets from `-2.5` px through `+1.5` px. Displayed labels below `1.0` tighten spacing, while labels above `1.0` add spacing.

## Line height

Adjust the vertical spacing between terminal lines. Settings labels the steps from `1.0` through `1.8`.

The stored values intentionally skip raw `1.1`-`1.4`. Those low values can collapse to the same snapped row height when the selected font's measured glyph height dominates or device-pixel snapping maps them together; the result depends on the font metrics and device-pixel ratio. The default display label is `1.2`.

## Focus border and selection

The Terminal tab also controls whether a focused terminal shows a top focus border, a bottom focus border, or both. Both are enabled by default. The same tab includes **[Copy on select](../terminal/basics.md)**, which is off by default.

## Live preview

The Terminal tab includes a terminal preview. It waits for selected font weights to load, then renders sample terminal output using the selected family, size, regular weight, bold weight, line height, letter spacing, focus-border settings, and effective light/dark theme.
