# Interface font and scale

The Appearance tab controls the font family and font scale for Solo's application UI. Terminal text has its own separate font controls on the Terminal tab.

## Choosing the interface font

1. Open **Settings** and go to **Appearance**. By default, `Cmd/Ctrl+,` opens Settings; you can remap or disable this shortcut in **Settings > Hotkeys**.
2. Use **Interface font family**.
3. Pick a font, or choose **System default**.

The list pulls from fonts installed on your system. **System default** uses your operating system's standard UI font, which is what Solo uses out of the box.

The interface font applies to application UI text — sidebar, settings, modals, and other app chrome. It does not change terminal text; the terminal font family is configured separately in [Terminal font settings](./font-settings.md).

## Adjusting font scale

### Via settings

1. Open **Settings** and go to **Appearance**. By default, `Cmd/Ctrl+,` opens Settings; you can remap or disable this shortcut in **Settings > Hotkeys**.
2. Use **Interface font scale**.
3. Choose one of the `A` size steps.

### Via the command palette

1. Open the full command palette. By default, `Cmd/Ctrl+K` opens it; you can remap or disable this shortcut in **Settings > Hotkeys**.
2. Search for "increase application font size" or "decrease application font size".
3. Run the matching action.

- `Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+=` increases application font size.
- `Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+-` decreases application font size.

## What it affects

Interface font scale changes the CSS root font size for Solo's UI. At the default `1.0` step, Solo uses its stylesheet default. At other steps, Solo writes a root `font-size` equal to the scale multiplied by the 14 px UI base size.

It affects application UI text and layout that is sized from the root font size, including sidebar rows, settings, buttons, modals, toasts, and other app chrome.

Terminal font size is controlled separately in [Terminal font settings](./font-settings.md). Terminal layout measurements still account for both interface scale and terminal font settings, but the visible terminal font size is changed with the terminal font-size control.

## Range

Available steps are:

| `20/13` | 154% | 21.5 px |

The `19/13` and `20/13` steps are available only for interface scale. Terminal font-size steps stop at `18/13`.

## Persistence

Interface font family and scale are saved locally and restored on launch. They are personal preferences, not shared via project configuration.
