# Moving a license to another machine

Solo licenses are tied to a device ID. If you're switching machines, deactivate on the old machine first, then activate on the new one.

## Recommended flow

1. On the old machine, open **Settings** > **Account** and choose **Deactivate**. By default, `Cmd/Ctrl+,` opens Settings; you can change this shortcut in **Settings** > **Hotkeys**.
2. On the new machine, open the [license activation prompt](./activating-license.md) and enter the license key. Solo submits it with the new machine's device ID for validation.

Deactivation resets the old machine to the [free tier](./free-tier.md) locally. Solo also tells the license server to remove that device from your account.

If the server deactivation request fails, Solo still deactivates locally and shows a warning that the old device may still appear active on your account.

Your projects, commands, settings, and local app data do not move with the license.

If you don't have access to the old machine anymore, use **Send feedback** in **Settings** > **Account** to describe the situation.
